From Cold Hands to Open Flame

01 Hold flint edge-up

Grip the flint firmly between thumb and forefinger, with a sharp edge pointing upward. Rest a small piece of char cloth on top of the flint.

02 Strike downward with the steel

Hold the C-shaped striker in your dominant hand and strike it downward sharply against the flint edge. Sparks will fly on to the char cloth.

03 Watch for the ember

The char cloth will begin to glow orange at the point of spark contact. This glowing coal can last 30–60 seconds — more than enough time.

04 Transfer and blow

Fold the char cloth into your tinder bundle, close it gently around the ember, and blow softly and steadily until the bundle ignites into flame.
